Among the Indian dance traditions such as Kathak, Kathakali, Bharatha and Manipuri, the Bharatha Natya dance tradition holds a special place.Bharatha Natya is the main classical dance in South India.

It is said that Bharatamuni's book Drama was the source of this dance tradition.This is a South Indian dance tradition.The Bharata Natya tradition began with a Hindu religious background.

In the past, this dance was performed by women as Dasi Attam as an offering to the gods.These women were called Devadaseen.The Bharata Natyam tradition developed with the intervention of a Thanjavur brother.
